Good to know
Discord raised the free limit from 8 MB to 10 MB. Older guides still say 8, which is why files that should fit are sometimes made smaller than they need to be. This page aims at 10 MB and keeps the quality that leaves you.
Nitro raises the limit to 50 MB, Nitro Basic to 50 MB as well. Pick the free target field on the tool and type the number — the plan is worked out from your clip's length, so a longer video simply gets a lower bitrate.
Up to 64 GB. Large videos are processed in sections: finished sections stay in your browser's private storage, so if the tab is closed or the device sleeps, choosing the same file again with the same settings continues where it stopped. Long recordings still take a while — a computer is much faster than a phone.
Choose the WhatsApp preset. It aims for 16 MB, the limit for a video inside a chat, and works out resolution and quality for you.
Attachments are Base64 encoded and grow by roughly a third on the way. A 25 MB file arrives as about 33 MB and bounces off a 25 MB limit, so the Gmail preset aims for 18 MB and Outlook for 14 MB.
The browser cannot decode those containers reliably. Accepting them would mean a run that fails halfway through, so they are turned down straight away instead.

Every frame is decoded and encoded again. That is what makes the file smaller or different — and it costs some detail, most visibly in fast motion and fine texture.
Which video codecs work depends on your browser. Chrome and Edge read the most, including H.265 on many machines; Safari and Firefox refuse some. A file that will not open here usually opens in Chrome. A long or high-resolution video is limited by your device's memory. Phones give up earlier than laptops — half an hour of 4K can be too much.
Only when it has to be re-encoded. Cutting, joining and removing the sound track copy the picture data unchanged, so those are lossless. Compressing and adding a watermark do re-encode, which is why they take longer.
There is no fixed limit. What decides is the memory of your device: a phone manages a few minutes comfortably, a computer handles far more. If a long video fails, splitting it first and working on the parts usually helps.
